One of Scotland's leading artists, Howard was born in Aberdeen in 1952. Howard's work looks at symbols and imagery from medieval and Renaissance art. He received an M.A. with Honours in Fine Art from the Edinburgh College of Art in 1975. Howard has received a Helen Rose Travelling Scholarship award for study in Italy. Other awards include a Guthrie Award from the Royal Scottish Academy, two Scottish Arts Council Awards, a William Gillies Bequest Scholarship and a British Council Award. Howard was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1983 and has played a very active role on committees of the Academy since that time. Howard's work is shown widely in Europe and USA, including solo exhibitions in Glasgow, Trondheim and Chicago.
